Job Description:
The Stock and Metal Processing Specialist at H&R Steel plays a critical role in assisting walk-in customers with stock and special-order metal requests while ensuring efficient and safe material handling. This position requires a strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Assistance

  • Assist walk-in customers with locating stock or placing special metal orders.

  • Clearly communicate with the office receptionist regarding customer selections for purchase.

  • Ensure a safe and organized customer browsing area, prioritizing safety while providing access to materials.

  • If required, record customer information, including name, phone number, project description, date, and time. Relay this information to the appropriate team member for follow-up.

Metal Handling & Processing

  • Lift and move heavy materials (up to and over 100 lbs) manually or with the assistance of a forklift.

  • Organize and store daily metal deliveries in the appropriate locations to maintain a clean and safe workspace.

  • Process metal orders by cutting, punching, shearing, or bending materials.

    • If time allows, process materials immediately for waiting customers.

    • When working as part of a two-person team, divide responsibilities to balance immediate processing and taking job requests for customers in line.

  • Maintain accurate records of completed processing requests and communicate updates to customers promptly.

Stock Management

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of stock items and availability.

  • Communicate low stock items to the office receptionist by 4:00 PM daily to ensure timely reordering.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Ability to lift and move materials weighing over 100 lbs.

  • Proficient in operating a forklift (certification preferred or training provided).

  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities to manage multiple customer requests simultaneously.

  • Basic knowledge of metal processing techniques (training can be provided).

  • Clear communication skills for coordinating with both customers and office staff.

  • Commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly work environment.

  • Ability to prioritize safety while engaging with customers and materials.

Work Environment and Expectations

  • This is a physically demanding role requiring frequent lifting, bending, and material handling.

  • You will interact directly with customers, ensuring they receive prompt and courteous service.

  • The work area must be kept clean, organized, and safe at all times to comply with safety standards and enhance customer experience.

  • Communication and teamwork are essential, especially during busy periods when coordinating with both the office receptionist and other stock team members.

Compensation

Hourly pay between $18-25 per hour depending on experience. Performance evaluations and goal reviews occur annually, with opportunities for raises and bonuses based on individual contributions.
